Roland is a fighter and one of the strongest people I know. To say we met under unfortunate circumstances would be an understatement, but I will never forget, the look in his eyes. I will survive this they said, whatever it is I need to do, I’ll do it. In true Roland form, he was hospitable, made jokes and even offered to cook for me.
Roland had every right to be bitter and mistrustful of the world. Instead, Roland filled his heart with love for his family, his neighbors and Kilo. And oh, how his family loved him....fiercly and dearly. I lost track of the number of times his sisters drove back and forth between Utah and California, but they were always in his corner. Always treating him with the utmost dignity and respect and making sure those who crossed his path, did so in kind. Roland’s siblings were his source of comfort, nurturance, protection and peace.
Roland found a sense of purpose in getting to know and encouraging his nieces and nephews. He really believed that the world was going to a be a better place because of them.
Roland embodies courage, bravery and resilience. I am so blessed to have known him, to learn from him and to be cared for by him.
