Edward Roland Child's Obituary
Edward Roland Child passed away on September 1, 2024, at the Holy Cross Davis Hospital from a heart condition. Roland was born July 14, 1939, at the old Dee Hospital in Ogden Utah to Roscoe Edward and Mary Gibson Child.
Roland grew up in Riverdale Utah. He attended the old Riverdale Elementary School, Roy Junior High School and graduated from the old Weber High School on Washington Boulevard.
Roland lived a happy, very adventurous life. During his early childhood, his dad was drafted into the army during World War II. His mom had three young boys. She and dad made the decision to have her move down to West Weber with her parents for about a year. Roland loved his time in West Weber and talks fondly of the time he spent with his grandparents, Heber C and Mary Amanda Gibson, on the family farm. Roland has very fond memories of West Weber.
Roland worked as a mechanic at his dad's Service Station, Child Garage. Later, when his dad was having a health problem, Roland managed the garage business. He was also the fire chief of the Riverdale Fire Department. Roland had a dog named Buck that was his best friend. He went with him everywhere and probably places where he shouldn’t.
Roland liked fast cars and had some really nice ones.
He met a beautiful, smart, intelligent girl named Diana Payne, in his early life. They married in 1965. Roland finished his degree at Weber State College. They moved to San Francisco California where he graduated from Golden Gate College, with his master's degree in business. He and Diana later divorced.
He met a wonderful, smart, beautiful woman named Barbara Lai while living in San Francisco. They married on May 1, 1976, in California. They bought a home which Roland loved in San Francisco. They later adopted one son, Marc, who they poured their heart into. Roland worked as Vice President of the accounting division at the Bank of America. He later worked as an auditor for Santa Clara California. He retired at the age of 80 reluctantly at the urging of his wife and son. He and Barbara traveled extensively. He loved visiting new countries and trying new cuisine.
On June 22, 2023, his beloved wife Barbara was killed along with his dog Buddy. This was so hard. Roland returned to live in Utah with family, Fairfield Village and Chancellor Gardens. He always had hopes of returning to San Francisco, which he loved.
Roland was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, son Marc, his parents Roscoe Edward and Mary Gibson Child, two brothers Glenn R. Child and Reid J. Child. He survived his brother Vern (Lola) Child, two sisters Mary Lou (Doyle) Allen, Marilyn (Larry) Savage and Kilo.
The family would like to thank his caregivers at Holy Cross Davis Hospital for their kind, compassionate and competent care. You treated our family with such respect. We would also like to thank Jackson Lee, his best friend in California, for his attention to details which could only be handled in San Francisco. Roland looked forward to his phone calls and especially the boy’s night out.
Laura, we thank you for being such a support to Roland. You helped him through such a tragic situation. He went through it with your support and caring professionalism, and he counted you as one of his best friends as well.
Funeral Services will be held on September 7, 2024. The viewing will be held at 10:00 am with the funeral starting at 11:00 am at the West Weber LDS Church 4100 W. 900 S. West Weber (Ogden) Utah.
