Herbert Greer
1938-2018
Herb Greer was born on November 2, 1938 to Carr F. and Margaret S. Meikle Greer. He was born in Winslow, Arizona. He was the 4th of 5 children. He died on May 11, 2018 surrounded by his family. He has been interred in the Orem City Cemetery.
He moved to Provo at the age of 3 and grew up in the shadow of Brigham Young University. He graduated from Brigham Young University High School in 1957 and joined the United States Army Reserve and was stationed at Ft. Ord and Ft. Belvoir.
Herb always loved music and singing. He was in many choirs and musicals and was in the marching band. He was also in an Army band and Chorus while in the Army
He served an LDS Mission to the North Central States during 1959-1961. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1964 and 1969 and began his teaching career in Ketchikan, Alaska. His life was spent in teaching and educational administration.
He had a life-long love of Alaska. He worked there many summers while going to college. He returned many times to visit and fish.
He was also a great fisherman from and early age. He would ride his bicycle from his home in Provo to the river and many ponds to fish after school. He even won second place in a fishing derby at age 12. Being out of doors was very important to him.
He married Kathleen McEuen in the Los Angeles Temple and they were married for 54 years. They are the parents of 8 children.
After teaching in Alaska Herb returned to Provo and received his Masters Degree from BYU and moved to Redding, California to begin his teaching and administration career. He taught 4th and 5th grade and then took a job in the Superintendent’s office. He finished his California stay as Superintendent of Pacheco School District.
Herb and family returned to Utah in 1985 and he taught school in Daggett School District in Manila, Utah. He taught 5th and 6th grade and was the principal of the elementary school while also teaching music in High School at the same time. He then returned to Orem and finished his career at Cherry Hill Elementary School.
He was also an active Scoutmaster for many years and had many adventures with the boys.
Herb is survived by his wife, Kathleen and his children; Keith and Jenni Greer, Orem, Becky and Wes Adams, Bountiful, Thayne Greer, Provo, Nathan and Mary Greer, Nampa, Idaho, Laura and Cole Christensen, Lindon, Meredith and Ian Greer, Saratoga Springs, and Kenny and Susan Greer, Spanish Fork. There are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Shannon and granddaughter Devon.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00 am, at the Springwater LDS Chapel at 1810 Springwater Drive, Orem, UT.
