James Kay Hiatt's Obituary
James Kay Hiatt, 85, passed away September 15, 2023 in South Jordon, Utah. Kay was born January 26, 1938, in Mt. Airy, No. Carolina, to James C. And Margaret Sutphin Hiatt. He married Patricia Kay Hafen on December 8, 1966, in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of three children.
He received his BS degree and a Masters in Education Administration from Appalachian State in Boone, No. Carolina. He taught math at Granite High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1964 until 1970. He then moved to Stuart, Virginia, where he was principal of Patrick County High School for 20 years and then was Director of Administration for Patrick County Schools until he retired in 1998. He and his wife, Pat, moved to Sandy, Utah, in 2003. Kay’s life was one of service to his community and church. He served on the Virginia High School League, was state chairman of the National Beta Club, serving on the National Board of Directors for six years. He was elected to the Stuart Town Council twice. He belonged to the Stuart Rotary Club, was president for one year, and was given the Paul Harris award for community service. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the British Mission from 1962-64. He was a branch president in Virginia three times and was the president of the Virginia Central District for eight years. He served in the Raleigh No. Carolina Temple for two years and was on two high councils. After moving to Sandy, he was a councilor in his ward bishopric, high priest group leader, and councilor in the elders quorum. He was a service missionary in Salt Lake City’s inner city for two years and at the Sandy Deseret Industries for one year. He also served in the Draper Utah Temple for six years. Kay was a wonderful husband and father and a fun, loving grandpa. For the past 20 years he has enjoyed playing golf with the league at Mick Riley golf course. He enjoyed travel and returned to No. Carolina and Virginia for visits every year. He is survived by his wife, his children Kathryn and Wayne Davis of Riverton, Utah, Michael and Rachelle Hiatt of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Mark and Kirra Hiatt of Evanston, Wyoming, 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Nancy Tame of Sandy, Utah, Lois and Wayne McBride of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and his brothers Max and Dottie Hiatt, Leon Hiatt of Mt. Airy, No. Carolina, and Monty and Carolyn Hiatt of Dobson, No. Carolina. Services will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 11:00 AM in the LDS chapel located at 4080 West 12600 South, Riverton Utah. A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30.
