Jiayue "Joy" Feng's Obituary
Joy!
On the morning of Wednesday, February 1st, 2023, Joy, our beloved Dar, passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah. Joy was blessed to be surrounded by friends, family, and her most treasured companion Jack (her service animal of 6 years). Although she lost her long and gallant battle with cancer, Joy stayed true to her name and imparted us all with countless joyous memories. Her radiant positivity influenced many and will never be forgotten.
Joy was born May 26th, 1994, to her loving father and mother, Erqiu Feng and Xiaoling Huang, in Haikou City, Hainan Province, China.
From an early age, Joy possessed outstanding academic talent and excelled in school. This allowed her to move to America for high school when her mother obtained a position as visiting professor at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. After graduating with high honors from East High School in 2012, she went on to attend college at the University of Utah.
During Joy’s studies at the university, she was tragically diagnosed with a brain tumor. While this would shatter almost anyone’s confidence, Joy refused to give up. Instead, she challenged herself to achieve even more. Joy participated in the University’s Summers Study Abroad Program in Kiel, Germany, where she studied language and culture. While keeping her perfect grades in school, Joy was accepted into the University’s Presidential Ambassador program. She also dedicated countless hours to volunteering for her community with her sorority members. Somehow, she even found spare time to learn how to play the cello. After several fulfilling years, Joy graduated in 2017 at the top of her class with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Following her graduation, Joy returned to the University of Utah to work as a research coordinator, alongside her former professors Dr. Kopecek and Dr. Yang in November 2020.
Despite having finally started her career, Joy was determined to further her education. In 2021, she applied and was accepted into the University of California San Diego Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Program. In the summer of 2022, Joy fulfilled her lifelong dream of working for a top-rated pharmaceutical company when she was hired for an internship at Johnson & Johnson. During her internship, Joy worked on a research project that was presented company-wide. In the same year, she also completed her schooling and was awarded her Master of Chemistry and Biochemistry on November 23rd, 2022.
During the course of her studies, she found love in 2016. She met Jason and together they conquered the next 7 years by each other’s sides. They married on August 3rd, 2018 in the beautiful gardens of Red Butte. Their time together was filled with endless adventures, laughter, and last but not least love. The pair lived far and wide from Seattle, Washington to San Diego, California but eventually found their way back to Salt Lake City, Utah where they spent Joy’s last moments with her loved ones.
Of Joy's many talents, including music, academia, business, many others, but most of all cooking. Joy loved to spend time with her family and friends, often treating them to her gourmet, home-cooked meals. Joy loved exploring delicious new recipes from a multitude of regions, cultures, and styles.
Although Joy was timid, she had an extraordinary ability for making friends wherever she lived. Her aura of positivity and happiness followed her and touched each person she met. A prevalent theme in her life was that she loved learning and sharing her newfound talents with friends, family, and mentors. While Joy is no longer with us, her kindness and wisdom will forever live on in our hearts.
Joy is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jason Voss, and her parents, Erqiu Feng and Xiaoling Huang; as well as her father and mother-in-law, Randy and Jill Voss, sister and brother-in-laws, Amy and Tyson Pace, Anne and Aaron Blackner, Lori and Jeremey Harris, 11 loving nieces and nephews, beloved friends, mentors, professors, and last but not least Jack (her best paw friend, special boy, guardian angel, and ever watchful, kind, obedient, and beautiful goldendoodle service dog).
It is a terrible loss and leaves us a great void losing someone who has shared so much love for those around her, but even now, we feel her spirit.
We love you Dar.
