John Lawrence Lundgren's Obituary
John Lawrence Lundgren was born August 4, 1963, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Shirley Lawrence and John Ross Lundgren. He grew up in Bountiful, Utah with his two sisters. He graduated from Bountiful High School. John passed away on October 9, 2022, with his family at his side after a long battle with esophageal cancer.
John served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uruguay. He learned Spanish and spoke it well which would be useful throughout his life. He always spoke of returning to Uruguay someday.
After returning from his mission, John attended the University of Utah where he met the love of his life, Julie Vuyk. John and Julie were married in the Salt Lake Temple on December 12, 1986. They were blessed with four beautiful children that John loved very much. He was very proud of all his children and loved to be with his family above all else. Almost five years ago John and Julie were blessed to add a beautiful granddaughter to their family. John could not have been more delighted.
John served his country in the Utah Air National Guard. During Operation Desert Storm his unit was activated and although they never left the US, he was ready to do whatever was asked of him.
In 1989 John was privileged to join the Salt Lake City Police Department, a job he had wanted for a long time. He spent the majority of his career as a Patrolman. He loved being a street cop as it allowed him to serve his fellowman in so many ways. Another favorite assignment was School Resource Officer at East High School. He enjoyed working with the kids there and made many lasting friendships in that assignment. He also worked for a short time as a larceny detective. Because of his health he was forced to retire earlier this year after 32 years of service to his fellow officers and the citizens of Salt Lake City.
John loved fishing with friends and with family. He enjoyed playing guitar for his family and for friends. He was a life-long learner and loved to watch Jeopardy and to play online trivia games with anyone who would challenge him. He was an avid University of Utah fan. One of his favorite things was taking his kids to Utah football games. He would take each child to dinner and a game. His kids will always remember those times fondly. As his health declined, he was unable to attend the games in person, but he found that he also loved watching the games from the comfort his father-in-law’s couch.
John is survived by wife, Julie; two daughters, Maggie and Emma Lundgren; two sons, Nicholas and Alexander Lundgren; and his granddaughter, Nora. He is also survived by his sisters, Leanne Hill and Janice Lundgren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
