Karen C. "Kay" Fleck's Obituary
Karen C. “Kay” Fleck, The greatest Green Bay Packer Fan to ever live, passed away in her sleep at home in Layton, UT on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at the age 83. Kay was born in Green Bay, WI on July 12, 1939 to Norman C. Rappatta & Amber A. (Sweet). She married her first husband, Fritz Roden and had 2 children, Richard J. & Sandra. They were later divorced. She had 3 other children from previous relationships before settling in Utah and meeting Tony Fleck. They were married on February 3, 1971 in Carson City, NV. Together they had a daughter, Susan Kay.
They owned & operated Tony & Kay’s Trading Post for 25 years and they were well respected among the Native American & Mountain Man/Women community. Tony passed away on December 28, 1998, just five weeks shy of their 28th wedding anniversary. Kay also enjoyed many types of crafts and was especially talented at creating 3D art. She owned & operated her own business, Kay’s Gallery, out of her home in Sandy, UT. Her greatest works of 3D art were of the LDS Temples. She was a convert to the LDS church at the age of 60, after Tony passed away. She proudly served a mission as a Family History Consultant.
Kay is survived by her sister Darleen LaBine, Rapid City, SD; brother Ron Grunniwaldt (Brenda), Mountain, WI, her children, Richard Roden (Laurie), Belle Fourche, SD; Susan Cheney (Chris), Layton, UT; Cyndi Benson, WI; Laura Hoffman (Paul), Greenville, WI; Michael K. Fleck, unknown location. Granddaughter Darcie Guenon (Tyrel Ivie), great grandson Owen Ivie; Granddaughter Amber York, great grandson Carson York. Also survived by her nephew Alan LaBine and niece Shelly LaBine, who became her primary Caregivers while living in South Dakota, prior to moving back to Utah in 2022. Along with her extended grandchildren, great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews & their families.
Kay expressed not wanting an extravagant funeral, but instead, a celebration of her life for family & friends to reminisce and say their farewells. She will be immediately cremated and will continue to reside with her daughter, Susan.
We will celebrate her life and have her viewing on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 11:00am - 1:00pm at the Sun Hills Ward 3290 N. 1050 E. Layton UT 84040. A luncheon will be provided by her Sisters of the Relief Society .
