It was Lee who set the foundation for my 37 year tenure as a high school art teacher...first 10 years at Alhambra High and the remaining 27 in Orange County. As my very first department chair, his patience and humor helped me through those rough first couple of years that I would return year after year happy and full of new ideas. Knowing that he was just a short hallway away gave me the confidence to grow into a career that I will always refer to as "the best job ever!" His relationship with his students, disciplined but always with great empathy, is what I have aspired to every day in the classroom. Lee showed me by example how important, significant, meaningful, purposeful being a teacher is all about. Lee, all it takes is a whiff of cocoa butter and you materialize right in front of my eyes. And to this day, when I need to step out to the restroom, I too am "going to see a man about a horse."

I was an art student at Alhambra High School in the mid-70s, and Lee Lyon's jewelry classes were my favorites. He became a mentor to me over those 4 years, about jewelry as well as life. He generously allowed me to use the classroom during lunch or if there was not another class in there and I wanted to work. My relationship with my own father was tense, as is common during those teen years, and I found in Lee a father figure with whom I could have safe conversations about life and the future. I even flipped his name around so he could be a Chinese dad (Lyon Lee). I had such respect for the way he led his classes and the care he extended to his students. Even if he had to put the unruly ones in their place, he did it with a firm kindness. He was well loved by his students. At the end of high school, I had to choose between studying art in college or taking a jewelry company up on their offer to put me through gemology school. Lee helped me weigh the pros and cons of that decision wisely, and in the end, I went to Cal State Long Beach as an art major, eventually graduating in graphic design. Lee came to my graduation. It was an honor to know him as both teacher and mentor. His life shaped the trajectory of mine in positive ways I will always be grateful for.
