Lyn Monson Lyman's Obituary
LYN. MONSON. LYMAN, 1930 – 2021
This diminutive dynamo was born ThoraLyn Monson, 14 June, 1930, in Pleasant Grove, Utah, as the fifth child and second daughter of Byron and Casse Monson, but throughout most of her life was known simply as “Lyn”. She received her last ecclesiastical calling 14 July, 2021 when she was called to join her parents and siblings in their post-mortal service to the Savior.
One of ten children, she spent her early years in Pleasant Grove where as a princess in the Annual Strawberry Festival in that city, she made her debut into society. Even as a little girl her feminine charm and beauty were readily recognized. From Pleasant Grove the family moved to Salt Lake City, and later to Murray, where she graduated from High School in 1947 as a cheer leader in the Smelterites Pep Club.
Soon after graduating from high school, she married and became the mother of two beautiful little girls, Suzanne and Kathleen. Sadly the marriage failed, and she then became the bread winner for her little family, working as teller and loan officer at Continental Bank in Sale Lake City. It was while employed there that she was courted by a young Army officer, Scott Thomas Lyman, who ultimately won her hand, and as the poet said, “that made all the difference”.
Beautiful, intelligent, talented and refined, Lyn was recognized throughout her life as a stellar example of service, first to her family, then to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to her country. She followed her husband to many military posts in the United States as well as to Germany, where they added three more beautiful children, Karen, David and Eric to their family before returning to the U.S. in 1963. A consummate teacher, in German, Spanish or English, Lyn taught or presided over the Primary, the Young Women or the Relief Society of the Church, as well as an instructor of the early morning seminary, but her greatest success was as mother to the five children and in time a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who to this day honor her as the quintessential example of righteous womanhood.
After her husband’s retirement from the Army, Lyn continued her dedicated service by serving with him in seven full-time missions for her Church. A particularly joyful calling was presiding with her husband over the Queretaro, Mexico Mission, and later in the Missionary Training Center in Bogota, Colombia. She enjoyed and excelled in teaching these young missionaries, which she did with the same zeal and skill as she had her own children and the countless young people she had instructed before her missions. Literally hundreds of them remember her today as their beloved mission “Mother”. In addition to proselyting missions, she enjoyed serving as a temple missionary, and in later life served for several years as an assistant sealing coordinator in the Timpanogos Temple.
Truly, it can be said of her, as a wise King Solomon said in Proverbs 31: “ Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her. . . .She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 20 July 2021 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building located at 120 North 400 West, Orem, UT. Viewing will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, 19 July 2021 at the church and again from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
