Ned L Opheikens' Obituary
Ned L. Opheikens
1943 – 2024
Our dear father, grandpa, great grandpa, uncle, friend, mentor, barber and loving husband passed away July 4, 2024, from cancer.
Ned was born Sept. 23,1943 to June Ethel Monson and Leroy Shiffman in Logan, UT. His parents divorced and June married Henry J. Opheikens, who later adopted Ned and raised him along with his sister Gloria (Noel) Kartchner and brother Boyd (Joyce) in Ogden, Utah.
He graduated from Ben Lomond High School and the Salt Lake Barber College in 1961. For the summer of 1961 Ned was a fire fighter in Idaho before settling into full time barbering. He worked at the barber shop on 24th and Grant Ave. until he and his brother bought the Kiesel Barber Shop in the Kiesel Building in Ogden.
Ned married Claudia Sims on June 17, 1964, in Ogden, UT They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Ogden Latter-day Saint Temple July 17, 1974. Together they had 5 children Troy (Holly), Layton, UT; Shane, Los Angeles, CA.; Tyree (Deana), Pleasant View, UT; Heath (Sabrina), Marsing, ID. and Hope Wood.
Ned enjoyed the Aristocrats Car club where he worked on and raced cars for fun. He later joined the Ogden Police department as a reserve police officer for 7 years.
Ned liked fishing, camping and most anything that included his children. Coaching his boy’s hockey and soccer teams was a huge joy in his life.
After retiring in 2005, Ned still found time to cut hair in his home for several special previous customers who have become great friends! He not only cut hair, he had a special gift for listening patiently and sending these friends home feeling special too! On occasion when a friend was no longer able to come to our home, Ned would go to their home to cut their hair. He loved being the traveling barber and helping to brighten their day. Ned found a love for food and cooking. He was the chef in our home!
Ned had various callings in the church. He loved being the assistant Ward Mission Leader and sharing the gospel with others. He loved the full-time missionaries and enjoyed taking them shopping and to many of their meetings. His most beloved opportunity in the gospel was serving as a temple worker for 4 years in the Ogden Temple. There he met and served with many wonderful friends.
Ned is survived by his wife, 4 sons, 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister, daughter Hope and great grandson Stockton.
A special thanks goes out to Applegate Hospice, especially Jan, Melanie, Heather and Dan for their kind loving care of Ned and his wife and granddaughter.
