Peter Eugene Atwater's Obituary
PETER EUGENE ATWATER
1944-2020
KAYSVILLE, UT-
“IT’S HARD TO BE HUMBLE, WHEN YOU’RE AS GREAT AS I AM” Muhammad Ali
Peter Eugene Atwater was born in Portland, Maine to David Henry Atwater and Eva Viola Dyer on October 17, 1944. Throughout Peter’s legendary life he accomplished so much. He ran cross country as a high school and collegiate athlete, served an LDS Church Service Mission in Canada (where he learned the masonry trade) and proudly served his country as a military servicemember. While serving his mission, Peter was drafted to serve in the Korean War. After returning from war he moved to Ogden, Utah, where his love story began. On June 4, 1971 Peter, and the love of his life Joy Lin Roubinet, were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Peter and Joy had eight competitive children, twenty-four amazing grandchildren, and one, soon to be two, precious great-grandchildren. As a master mason, for over fifty years Peter dedicated his life (and his hands) to making the “American Dream” possible for so many people through the masonry trade. His fingerprints will literally remain on this earth forever.
Peter had a great passion for the game of basketball. Peter and the “Atwater Boys” made a name for themselves on and off the court. Peter kept busy coaching, playing, reffing, supporting, and loving the sport. Let’s continue to celebrate his life by playing basketball.
Peter also found happiness in spending time with his family, dancing, singing, going to concerts and state fairs, shopping, watching boxing, eating odd foods, collecting items, and so much more. He also knew how to spoil everyone around him. He loved to give. Peter was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
On September 30, 2020 Peter peacefully left this earth after a prolonged and valiant battle with cancer to be reunited with his eternal companion Joy. He was also preceded in death by his grandson Chance. Peter is survived by his children, in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jason Atwater; Julie (Lyle), Aspen Field; Jared (Annie), Hailee and Ryker Atwater; Jill (Wayne), Parker (Nicole) Hendrix and Stevie Rose, Jaxson, Gracie Rose and Anna Marymargaret Jones; Jeff (Jen), Maddie, Nash, Kort, and Kloee Atwater; Justin (Anna), Coleman, Hudson, Lincoln, and Wilson Atwater; Jacob (Chalee), Dash, Holden, Maximus, and Atticus Atwater; Janilee (Dwain), Janessa, Sophia, Isaac, and Mason Merrill.
Peter was surrounded and loved by his immediate family members at his passing. His last words of advice uttered to some of his children included a favorite quote he often shared, “A setback is a setup for a comeback.” He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Due to Covid restrictions no public viewing will be held. A small gathering of invited family members and close friends will hold a graveside service on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. We invite all family, friends, and loved ones to visit the following link to share a memory they have with Peter. www.commemo.co/contribute/ea964e
Interment will be at the Kaysville City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses, CNA’s, and hospice workers for the amazing care they gave Peter. You truly worked “Miracles.”
