Rulon Frederick DeYoung's Obituary
Rulon Frederick DeYoung
1941 - 2022
Rulon Frederick DeYoung died Tuesday October 4th after succumbing to the effects of Long COVID. He was born September 11th 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the eighth of nine children of Marion Smith and Henry DeYoung. Rulon adored his older siblings as they took part in raising him. He was a champion for his younger Down Syndrome brother Lowell. Being the second to the youngest in his family he spent a lot of time with his nieces and nephews as they were close in age. Together they began a tradition of playing highly competitive games of Acquire. (if you know, you know)
In his formative years his family lived on Capitol Hill. He was a West High School graduate and attended the University of Utah. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Serving in the London, England Mission. Upon his return home he attended the Capitol Hill Ward, where he met Diane Reeder-Elarth, a native Californian who was visiting family. The two fell in love and married November 01st 1963. Together they where blessed with three children.
Rulon had a golden heart and would help anyone in need. Rulon got his start in business at Murdock Travel which inspired him to start multiple travel agencies including: Worldwide Travel and Land, Sea and Air Travel. He found he had an entrepreneurial spirit and enjoyed the challenge of starting small businesses that were forward thinking and risk taking.
Rulon had a love of travel and hosting tours to the Hawaiian Islands several times a year between 1970 and 1980. He loved a good road trip, frequently taking the family to Yellowstone, Lake Powell, and Disneyland. He loved Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and was always up for a cook-out. He was an excellent chef and made dinner most nights for his family. He especially looked forward to cooking for and celebrating the 4th of July on Evergreen Avenue at his sister Anne’s Home with his sisters, brothers, and their families.
Rulon is survived by his sister Neoma Lloyd (Earl), his children Danell Murdock (Steven), Diane Hale (Kelly), David DeYoung (Devon), his eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, many wonderful nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the care teams at Rocky Mountain Care Cottage on Vine, Rocky Mountain Hospice, Alta Ridge Memory Care and Atlas Hospice.
