Sheila Gay Winkler's Obituary
1938 – 2022
Sheila Gay Winkler, our beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away on May 9, 2022 in Salt Lake City, Utah after fighting bravely against a number of maladies that weakened her physically and emotionally. We already miss her greatly, but we find comfort in knowing she is finally at peace and free of the pain and suffering that plagued her for most of the past two years.
Sheila was born on November 26, 1938 in Springville, Utah to Harold Ralph Baum and Helen Madeline Greenlee. She grew up in a family with one older sister, Bonnie, and four younger siblings, Roger, Kathleen (Kathy), Carol Lou, and Susie. In 1957, she graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City. On June 2, 1961, she married Louis Albert Winkler in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Their union lasted 53 years, until Louis’ death, and produced two sons, Bryan and Douglas.
For over 30 years, Sheila worked in the IMS Department at Salt Lake City Corporation before retiring in 2014 at age 75. While working for The City, she held many positions and last worked as an Office Facilitator at the time of her retirement. Prior to her employment with The City, she worked for many years at Quality Press and Kibbe and Associates in Salt Lake City and at Ford Industries in Portland, Oregon.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Sheila had many callings, but she most enjoyed her work as a Primary Teacher, for which she served over 50 years. Through her dedication to teaching, she touched the lives of many children.
Throughout her life, Sheila was very skilled artistically. She enjoyed participating in a variety of arts and crafts, and her skill and attention to detail were evident in all her work. Her most cherished pastime was tole painting, and for over 30 years, she produced many beautiful pieces. For her 75th birthday, several of her friends honored her by displaying her work at her church. It was one of the happiest birthdays of her life, and we are so thankful to all her friends who made that evening possible.
In 1973, Sheila attended her first hockey game and immediately fell in love with the sport. Thereafter, “Beehive,” as she was affectionately known to her hockey friends due to her distinct hairstyle, was a fixture at games of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles where she sat next to the penalty box. She would later continue her love of hockey as an avid fan of the Utah Grizzlies at the Maverik Center.
Sheila is survived by her two sons, Bryan and Douglas, and two sisters Bonne Jones and Susie Cook. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Kathy Gordon, Carol Lou Palmer, and Roger Hales.
